GFM’s missionary residencies are designed with bi-vocational lay people in mind. Our passion as an organization and movement is to make disciples that make disciples and plant churches that plant churches among all of the remaining unreached people groups of the world. In order for that to happen, we are going to need an army of everyday Christians that are actively sharing their faith and making disciples. The problem is that it is estimated that only 3% of believers share the gospel and even less than that are making disciples. Many Christians know that they should be making disciples but they simply have never been discipled themselves or given the tools that they need in order to participate in the Great Commission. Our missionary residency is designed exactly for that purpose…to disciple Christians and in turn give them the tools they need to immediately go out and make their own disciples…..from “Jerusalem” to the ends of the earth!
While our missionary training school was created for people that are ready to drop everything and raise their own support to head to the mission field long-term, the missionary residency is designed for bi-vocational people that want to get their feet wet in missions before going “all in”. Missionary residencies are crafted for people that are working part or full-time jobs but willing to dedicate several hours per week getting equipped and then several hours per week going out into the harvest making disciples. It is a place where normal Christians can get the head (knowledge), heart (character), and hands (skills) that they need to share Good News, make disciples, start Bible studies, and form house churches right here in our home context as a way to get better prepared to do the same type of work cross-culturally.
Global Frontier Missions has strategically chosen gateway cities that have people from many different backgrounds (Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Atheists, Animists, etc.), so these are great places to get cross-cultural experience before going overseas. How great would it be if you were able to lead a few Chinese people to the Lord or start a Bible study or house church among Chinese students or business professionals here before launching over to China? How much more effective will missionaries be in the Middle East or North Africa if they have been a part of an emerging church planting movement here? If we aren’t doing it “right here”, there is nothing magical about getting on a plane that is going to make us do it “over there”. Missionary residencies give believers the skills that they need to make disciples whether they stay at home and live “on mission” here or end up going to the ends of the earth sharing Christ with those that have never heard.
A missionary residency might be perfect for you if:
- You are wanting to learn to share your faith and make disciples or get more tools to help do it more effectively
- You want the chance to live incarnationally among Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. living and sharing Good News
- You are a potential missionary that needs to pay down debt or has other obligations that need to be fulfilled before launching out to the field
- You want to be in community with other like minded kingdom people living on mission together among unreached peoples
- You are feeling led to be a tentmaker or serve in the mission field through a Business as Mission platform and want some practical hands-on training
- You are part of a local church that wants to catch the vision and get the tools needed to better make disciples in your local context
- You are interested in working part or full-time among internationals that have come to us doing diaspora missions
Dates: Aug 18, 2019 – May 17, 2020
Locations: Right now, we only have missionary residencies at our Atlanta base but hope to add them at other locations in the future.
Costs: $100 for the 10 months; these residencies are actually designed to be “zero budget” so that they are reproducible and can be used in any church context as well as overseas. However, we have chosen to charge a little something to cover materials, a few intensive trainings that will happen throughout the program, and some occasional meals and outreach materials.
Application: You can apply online to be a part of our next program. There is a $25 application fee so that we can run background checks on all applicants as we occasionally work among children as well as high risk populations.
