This list is not exhaustive. Is your question not in the list below? Go ahead and ask us!
Are there scholarship opportunities for the program?
No. We are unable to offer scholarships for Missionary Training School.
Can I bring a vehicle?
Yes! Much of your ministry will be in the area of your apartment, so you may not need to drive. But Houston is a large city and the mass transit system is not very efficient. A vehicle will be very helpful for getting around. If you are bringing a vehicle, please ensure you budget enough money for gas and maintenance. Also consider a security system or “club” for protection from thieves.
Can I get FAFSA to help pay for costs?
No. FAFSA is only for accredited degree granting institutions.
Can I watch movies or TV during my time?
Plan on not having enough time between school work and ministry to watch TV or movies. We suggest not watching any show with a rating higher than PG-13. Any movie or TV show with explicit sexual content is completely non-permissible.
Can married students attend? Does the price change?
Yes! Married students can attend. If they have a family, they can come too! But the price does change since we do not allow married students or families to live in the group housing. Instead, we will help the student(s) locate their own apartment in the correct area. The student(s) will then be responsible for paying their own rent and utilities. The average price for a two bedroom apartment in the area is $900/month. Utilities can get up to $200/month during the summer.
Tuition for married students is $4000 for the first spouse, and $2000 for the second.
Do I need to have ESL teaching experience?
No! The school is designed to give you the experience you are looking for.
Do I need to have prior experience in teaching ESL to come to this course?
No. We provide all necessary training as part of our curriculum.
Do the tuition fees include the costs for a degree?
No. The $790 a month cost only covers your basic tuition and housing. This is because not all students choose to pursue the degree option. Any students wanting to transfer their credits to Covenant Theological Seminary for the degree will need to budget additional finances to cover the extra fees.
There is a schedule of potential costs and more information at http://globalfrontiermissions.org/missionary-training-school/covenant-theological-seminary-bible-degree-for-gfm-mts-graduates/
Do you accept scholarships from outside sources, though you don’t provide them yourself?
It would completely depend on the source of the funding and if they consider our program acceptable to their terms and conditions.
Do you have a similar program for high school students?
Sorry, no. We require that all missionary training and summer interns have at least graduated high school.
Does admission into MTS guarantee my spot in the ESL certification program?
No. Our ESL certification program is done by a third party and all of our students will have to meet their standards. But, we believe if you can meet our standards for entry you will meet the standards for the ESL certification program.
How can I find out more specifics on the possible degrees offered?
Go visit our partners at Covenant Theological Seminary. http://www.cts-greenville.com/wpsf/?page_id=8240 has the details on the degree offered and how you apply for it.
How long does the TEFL certification last?
The TEFL certification offered doesn’t expire; it’s like getting a degree or certification — the certificate will always be valid, and it’s a matter of keeping up with professional development and changes in the field.
How many classroom hours per week will there be?
We won’t have many classroom hours per week. Most of the learning will happen through our online portal and will be self-directed. We will meet for 2-3 hours once or twice a week to discuss the videos and books and to spend time in prayer and discipleship. You will be expected to fulfill the 10-15 hours of practical ministry time each week by working in our English Program for refugees.
How much money do I need to raise for the 10 months?
We suggest at least $15,000 for your time if you are a single student living in GFM housing. $7,900 is for your housing and tuition. The remaining amount is to allow you to pay your bills (cell phone, automotive, etc), buy groceries and personal items as well as have some fun with your team. You will also want to plan for trips home at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Married students living in their own housing will need to figure out their budget outside of their tuition. Depending on the size of your family, we suggest about $2,000 a month above your tuition costs.
Is there a discount if I bring a friend?
Yes! If you are registered and accepted for MTS:ESL and you refer a friend, then you will be eligible for a $575 credit on your tuition.
* Amount is equivalent to the MTS:ESL tuition, housing and utilities portion of your monthly cost.
* Referred friend must apply and be fully accepted into the same MTS:ESL program you are attending. Credit will be applied to your account once your friend has paid the required 50% of tuition due by the start of class.
* Credit amount is for a single student living in GFM group housing. Amount is lower for married couples attending who refer a student (not their spouse).
What does ministry look like during school?
Your ministry times will primarily consist of working with an established ESL program for refugees. You could be teaching a class (with assistance), preparing lessons, doing administrative work and visiting students homes to practice. You are required to have ten ministry hours each week but no more than fifteen.
What does the Missionary Training School curriculum include?
Visit our curriculum page for all the details!
What if I am already a certified teacher?
You can still join us! In your application process we can discuss your teaching certifications and if you want to obtain the TESOL certification we are offering. If you feel you do not require it and only want the ESL classroom and church planting training we can reduce the cost of your tuition.
What if I want ESL experience but don’t want to get certified?
We can discuss this during the application process. The $7,900 tuition includes the tuition for the ESL certification. If you chose not to get certified we can reduce your tuition by the amount.
What is the application deadline?
What is the difference between the Houston MTS and the Atlanta MTS?
Where can the ESL certification be used?
The certification you can receive will be accredited and accepted in many countries around the world. But, as each institution and country have different standards, we cannot guarantee you being allowed to teach there. It is your responsibility to research the standards and necessary credentials for the country/institution you are wanting to work with after graduation.
Where will I be living?
You will be living with same gender roommates in an apartment. The complex we choose for you will be ethnically diverse and have many of your ESL students close by. GFM maintains control of the apartment and you should consider yourself a guest in the facility.
Will there be an internet connection in the apartment?
Yes. There is a large online component to your training so GFM will provide a high speed internet connection in each apartment. You will also be allowed to use the connection for personal activities like surfing, video chatting, social media, etc. Please limit your personal time on the internet so that it doesn’t impact school and ministry time. Any student found to be abusing the internet, especially in terms of the content being viewed (ie. pornography) will be facing discipline including dismissal from the program.
Will you accept international students in the program?
We cannot offer invitation letters for international students or help with the visa process in any way. All students in the MTS program must be able to legally reside in the USA for 10-12 months. Any necessary visas are the student’s responsibility.
Would taking this class in Houston enable one to be fully able to go to the field and work somewhere in ESL/TESOL environment? So no other degrees are needed?
There are no guarantees that our program would give you all the requirements to head overseas to teach English. Every country and the hiring companies/organizations inside have their own requirements. Typically you will need at least an accredited bachelors degree to go with your TEFL/TESOL certification.
