Ever since the book of Acts, God has been growing his kingdom and multiplying his church as a global movement of Christ followers. Today in the missions world, we continue to seek God to produce more Church Planting Movements (CPMs) throughout the world. A church planting movement can be defined as a rapid increase in the number of indigenous believers and churches that assume responsibility for planting other churches among the unreached. CPMs are Holy Spirit inspired movements characterized by radical prayer, abundant gospel sowing, obedience based discipleship, intentional daughter church planting, and heavy life-on-life leadership development. Church planting movement DNA is simple, reproducible, and transmitted to third, fourth and fifth generation disciples and churches. We highly recommend reading the book Church Planting Movements by David Garrison and Miraculous Movements by Jerry Trousdale to learn more.
The missions world is starting to use the term Disciple Making Movement (DMM) more than Church Planting Movement (CPM) mainly because Christ commanded us to make disciples and said that He would build His church. There are some nuances between the two different CPM and DMM approaches to movement, but there really is a lot of overlap in the basic biblical principles.
The goal of both CPM and DMMs is to plant the gospel, make disciples, and teach them to obey everything that Jesus commanded. As people live out God’s Word, they will make other disciples and part of being an obedient follower of Christ is meeting together as the body of Christ (church). Then leaders will be developed and released to continue making other disciples and planting more churches.
Global Frontier Missions leans heavily on church planting movement (CPM) and disciple making movement (DMM) principles in our training and in our outreach. We use a simple obedience based discipleship process developed by veteran missionaries like David Watson and David Hunt of City Team International called Discovery Bible Study (DBS) as well as 4 fields methodology. DBS is a very reproducible, inductive Bible study where people observe what the text says by writing it down or repeating it orally several times. Then, people interpret the passage by writing or saying it in their own words. After studying a passage, there is a heavy emphasis on applying God’s word by writing one or two “I will…” statements that people will obey immediately based on the Scripture studied and then everyone is accountable to the rest of the group. Finally, each person talks about who they will share what they are learning with as a way to keep evangelism/disciple-making built into the DNA of the movement.
Global Frontier Missions runs a five month missionary training school for full-time laborers and a five month missionary residency for people that work normal jobs but want to live missionally making disciples. In both of these programs, we train and model CPM and DMM principles being long-term practicioners and coaches of this type of ministry. We also come alongside local churches and train them on movement principles to help their people share the gospel, make disciples, start new groups, and form outreach teams. We would love to come share at your church and run a one day seminar on church planting movement principles. GFM is actively looking for more disciple making team leaders and members, so maybe pray about joining our full time staff.
